NEW DELHI, Aug 24: Indian Railways has achieved a historic milestone by completing the Bairabi-Sairang New Line Railway Project, bringing Mizoram’s capital Aizawl onto the national railway map for the very first time. Spanning 51.38 km, the project has been executed under the Act East Policy and stands as a symbol of progress and integration.
Constructed in four phases, the project showcases remarkable engineering with 48 tunnels stretching a total of 12.85 km and 142 bridges. Among these, Bridge Number 196 has emerged as a landmark structure. With its pier height of 114 meters-42 meters taller than the Qutub Minar-it is the second tallest pier bridge in India. In a unique cultural blend, the tunnels along the route have been adorned with vibrant Mizo murals, highlighting the State’s heritage within modern railway infrastructure.
The line received Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) clearance in June 2025, paving the way for passenger and freight operations. With its completion, Aizawl has become the fourth Northeastern state capital to be directly connected to the Indian Railways network.
This connectivity is set to transform Mizoram by reducing transport costs, boosting tourism and trade, creating jobs, and driving socio-economic growth across the region.
