JAMMU, Aug 11: The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) organized an orientation programme for the 2025-26 batch here today.
During the programme, students were engaged in line-up of sessions that combined tradition, academic introductions and first-hand professional insights from eminent speakers in media, defence and government communication.
During the event, Ghulam Abbas, director of the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC) for Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, explained CBC’s role as the government’s outreach arm, using campaigns, exhibitions and cultural activities to create public awareness about key programmes and policies.
Anil Bhat, Bureau Chief of Press Trust of India (PTI) for J&K, discussed the challenges of reporting from a sensitive region where events unfold quickly.
He explained the importance of verifying facts, understanding the operational environment of the Army and avoiding hasty conclusions in conflict reporting.
Komal Manhas, Bureau Head, News18 India, Jammu, delivered a talk on the styles of TV ground reporting, sharing practical tips and personal experiences from the field.
She emphasised the need for adaptability, accuracy and resilience, especially in challenging reporting environments.
Lt Col Suneel Bartwal, PRO Defence, Northern Command, spoke on the scope of defence journalism.
He introduced students to career paths in defence reporting and highlighted the responsibility, subject knowledge and ethics required to cover sensitive military issues effectively.
Earlier, Dr Dilip Kumar, Regional Director of IIMC Jammu, told students that they were not at IIMC to blend in but to take swings that matter in the wild world of media.
He also stressed the importance of professional excellence, telling students to develop such skills that “companies should seek you, not the other way around”.
Prof Anil Saumitra welcomed the students and asked them to be relentless in their pursuit of greatness.
Among others who attended the event included Assistant Prof Dr Vinit Utpal, Dr Rajendra Misra, Dr Ravinder Singh, Vishv, Bhawani Singh, Gulshan, Rajeev Kumar and Sudhansh Mishra.
