SRINAGAR, Aug 7: The Department of Food Safety has seized over 2,900 adulterated meat products and sealed multiple premises across Kashmir during a two-day enforcement drive targeting non-compliant Food Business Operators (FBOs).
A spokesperson said surprise raids were carried out in several districts to intensify the crackdown on unsafe food practices. “The drive was conducted on the directions of the Secretary, Health and Medical Education Department, and under the supervision of the Commissioner, Food and Drugs Administration.
In Srinagar’s Safakadal and Parimpora areas, officials seized 2,500 kababs prepared using frozen meat laced with unapproved food colouring. “The items were immediately destroyed on site to eliminate any public health risk,” the spokesperson said. He added an additional 150 kg of meatballs (gushtaba) was also confiscated, with samples sent for laboratory analysis and legal proceedings.
In a separate operation in Nagbal, Ganderbal, 250 kg of visibly spoiled meat was destroyed due to improper storage and handling. “Two food outlets in the district were sealed for maintaining unhygienic conditions,” the spokesperson added.
The department also reported illegal dumping of spoiled food in abandoned areas in Kakapora (Pulwama) and Khandey Colony, Nawgam (Srinagar), allegedly in an attempt to evade enforcement.
