Ukraine’s Zelenskyy dismisses 2 officials over involvement in corruption schemes

KYIV,  Aug 3: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dismissed two officials over their alleged involvement in corruption schemes related to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) purchases, according to the order published on the Ukrainian president’s website.

On Saturday, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) said a lawmaker had been detained on charges of involvement into a corruption scheme, namely overpriced purchases of UAVs and electronic warfare systems for the Ukrainian armed forces.

Ukrainian media reported that  Oleksii Kuznetsov from the Servant of the People party, Seri Haidai, former Luhansk (Luhansk) governor and Andrii Yurchanko, who formally occupies the post in the Luhansk Region.

“To dismiss Haidai Serhii Volodymyrovych from the position of the chairman of head of the State Administration of the Mukachevo District in Zakarpattia Oblast,” Zelenskyy’s order read.

Zelenskyy also dismissed Yurchenko from his post. Yurchenko was head of the Rubizhne City Military Administration.

Both orders fail to provide the reasons for dismissals.

Corruption is consistently seen as a major issue in Ukraine. On June 26, Ukrainian lawmaker Yaroslav Zheleznyak cited a survey conducted by Ukraine’s Center for Social and Market Research (SOCIS), which showed that 48.5% of Ukrainian citizens view corruption as the country’s most serious problem and that 65% consider it the authorities’ main failure.
