Srinagar, July 29: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) today carried out anti-encroachment operations in various areas across the city.
Officials said the drive aimed to clear public pathways, decongest traffic routes, and restore public spaces.
The drive was conducted in areas such as Sanat Nagar, Khayam, Karan Nagar, Hyderpora, Tengpora, Batamaloo, Shaheed Gunj, Bemina, Qamarwari, and bypass stretches including Bemina to Parimpora.
In these zones, officials said several illegal structures, stalls, and parked sale vehicles occupying roads were cleared.
The campaign, led by SMC Chief Anti-Encroachment Officer Mohammad Syed, is part of ongoing efforts in recent weeks to conduct drives in market areas and high-traffic zones.
In these areas, officials said, roadside encroachments, illegal shop extensions, and vehicles placed by car and motorcycle dealers have been obstructing both pedestrian and vehicular movement.
“This is not a one-time activity, but a continuous drive. Our focus is on locations where pedestrian movement is heavily disrupted and traffic congestion is worsened by illegal encroachments,” he said, emphasizing the department’s commitment to reclaiming public space.
He stated that SMC has issued formal notices to all violators, giving them time to remove their encroachments voluntarily.
The Chief Anti-Encroachment Officer also pointed out that locations near major hospitals and traffic junctions-such as JVC Hospital, Children’s Hospital, SMHS Hospital, and the Bypass near Shalteng and Parimpora-have witnessed severe encroachments, hampering not only traffic flow but also emergency services.
He also cautioned that strict action will continue against repeat violators.
