Accused booked for attempted murder, vehicle owner detained

JAMMU, July 28: A 20-year-old Thar driver intentionally tried to run over an elderly businessman after hitting his scooty in a road rage incident in Gandhi Nagar area of the district, prompting police to register an attempt to murder case against him.

The incident, captured on CCTV camera, which has been drawing sharp criticism from the social media users, shows one Manan Anand of Nanak Nagar, Jammu, driving the Thar vehicle (JK02DP9594) at a high speed near Green Belt Park in Gandhi Nagar on Sunday afternoon.

He hit an elderly man, identified as Kamal Dutt (68), son of Yog Raj Bakshi of Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, who was riding a scooty, leaving him injured.
As the sexagenarian, who owns a vehicle spare parts shop, tried to stand up, the Thar driver, instead of helping him, reversed his vehicle and ran over him again, leaving him seriously injured.
Later, the Thar driver exited the vehicle, abused the elderly man, and fled the crime scene.
Some passerby could also be seen watching his actions in shock but none of them helping the elderly man.
Reportedly, after receiving the information, the injured man’s son and other family members shifted him to Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu, where his condition was stated to be critical.
Speaking to mediapersons outside the hospital, his family members claimed he had suffered serious head injuries and was unable to recognize them. They urged the police to immediately arrest the accused and put him behind the bars.
A police officer said the owner of the vehicle and father of the accused, Rajinder Anand of Nanak Nagar, Jammu, has been detained, while a manhunt has been launched to arrest the accused, who is currently absconding.
According to the officer, the accused, an engineering student studying outside the UT, was initially booked under Sections 281 (rash and negligent driving) and 125(a) (endangering life or personal safety of others) of the BNS.
However, after analysis of the CCTV footage, he has now also been booked under Section 109 (attempt to murder), said the police officer.
The officer added that the vehicle used in the crime has been seized from the Nanak Nagar area today and further investigation has been set into motion.
