JAMMU, July 17: Residents of Patoli Magotrian, Ward No. 39, Lane No. 3 in Jammu North, have expressed serious concern over an abandoned Cellphone tower, posing threat to the lives and properties of the people.
While bringing this matter to the notice of the `Excelsior’, residents said that this nearly 150 ft tall tower was installed by Aircel Company near main Patoli Chowk, in the premises of S N Sharma in Lane Number 3 of Patoli Magotrian more than two decades ago. It was erected despite resentment by the residents of the area.
One of the residents RS Padha alleged that due to the tower some of the locals struggled with life threatening ailments and a few lost their lives. During strong wind-storm this tower moves/leans here and there and it is feared it may fall during such storm, causing loss of life and to the public property.
It may be recalled that during wind storm this June, a Cellphone tower had collapsed in Ramgarh area of district Samba causing loss to the public property. Moreover, this tower is no more in use by the company and has been abandoned by the Cellphone company for the last about 12 years.
The residents have urged the Deputy Commissioner Jammu and the Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation to take serious note of the issue and direct the concerned Cellphone company to dismantle this tower in the best interest of the safety of the residents of Lane No. 3, at Patoli under Ward No. 39.
They also requested the JMC authorities to construct a proper and wide rotary at main Patoli Chowk as it has turned accident prone and many mishaps often take place there.
