KATHMANDU, July 15:  Nepal’s Federal Affairs and General Administration Minister Rajkumar Gupta resigned on Tuesday after being accused in a multi-million bribery scandal.
Gupta, whose audio recording of bargaining for bribery in connection with the transfer and appointment of government staff was circulated by the media, announced his resignation via social media.
A complaint was lodged with the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) along with photos of two bags of bribery money.
He has, however, denied the charges and said: “Sometimes even a poison you have never taken can affect you – I have now fallen victim to such a false allegation.”
Gupta said he tendered his resignation to facilitate uncovering the truth through a proper investigation.
“I have submitted my resignation to Prime Minister K.P. Oli,” he said.
Lawmakers from both the ruling and opposition parties demanded Gupta’s resignation after the audio recording came out.
Oli on Monday summoned Gupta to Baluwatar, the official residence of the prime minister, and directed him to resign from the post, sources said. (PTI)
