JAMMU, July 12: M/s GVK Rattle Hydroelectric Project Ltd and L&T have stopped work on 850 Mega Watts project at Drabshalla due to the insecure atmosphere and repeated interference from some groups of people.
Reports said that a group of people forcibly entered the site offices of M/s GVK and L&T last evening and harassed the staff demanding employment in the project. Though the officials of both the companies tried to handle the situation yet mob didn’t relent and later locked the site offices.
Keeping in view the insecure atmosphere, both the companies closed their offices this morning and stopped ongoing works. Even a notice was pasted on GVK office mentioning that it was not possible for these companies to carry out activity in such a charged and insecure atmosphere.
It is pertinent to mention here that GVK is the developer of the project and L&T is the EPC Contractor.
A senior officer of the GVK said that for the last more than six months there has been huge interferences on the part of people, who have been disrupting the ongoing work every now and then.  “The people are frequently entering the site offices and taking hostage all the activities of the project”, he said, adding “we brought this to the notice of district administration a number of times but the situation has not changed and since it is not possible to carry out work in most insecure atmosphere we have decided to close our offices”.
In response to a question, he said, “I cannot say anything about resumption of our activities. The ball is in the court of administration”, adding “unless secured atmosphere is created we will not resume the work”.
The 850 Mega Watts Rattle Project was awarded on BOOT basis in 2010 with a gestation period of 60 months starting from the date of handing over of complete land required for the project and obtaining all the mandatory clearances from various Government departments.
M/s GVK Rattle HE Project Ltd is making best efforts to achieve the targets in spite of the fact that so far land required for the project has not been leased out to GVK by the JKSPDC.
