JAMMU, June 27: In a major initiative aimed at improving civic amenities and public health, MLA Jammu North, Sham Lal Sharma, launched two vital sewerage and drainage development projects worth Rs 3.78 crore in his constituency. The projects, sanctioned under the Jammu Municipal Corporation and executed by the Urban Environmental Engineering Department (UEED), will benefit residents of Ward No. 37 (Janipur Colony, Shivpuri) and Ward No. 59 (Top Paloura, Mandlik Nagar). Rs 1.96 crore has been allocated for Ward 37, while Rs 1.82 crore has been earmarked for Ward 59.
Sham Lal Sharma stated that these projects are designed to address long-standing issues related to wastewater disposal, rainwater drainage, and sanitation. “These works will not only improve civic infrastructure but also contribute to a healthier and cleaner environment for the people,” he said.
He also stressed the importance of proactive measures ahead of the monsoon season. “Our focus is on strengthening the Environmental Sanitation and Control (ESC) mechanism. Field teams are conducting pre-monsoon inspections and rapid cleaning operations to prevent flooding and sewer overflow,” he added.
Emphasizing public health, Sharma highlighted that the upgraded systems will help prevent water-borne diseases such as typhoid, cholera and hepatitis. Calling for community cooperation, he urged citizens to protect public infrastructure and actively participate in cleanliness drives. “These public assets belong to all of us. Their protection is key to achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, a dream guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he said.
The inauguration event was attended by senior BJP leaders, former councillors, Mandal Presidents, and UEED officials including Executive Engineer Ashwani Khajuria and AEE Sunil Thapa.
