SRINAGAR, June 25: Stressing the role of locals in ensuring the smooth conduct of the Amarnath Yatra, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, VK Birdi, today said that multi-layered and in-depth security arrangements have been put in place for the pilgrimage, begining next week.
Speaking to reporters after reviewing arrangements at the Nunwan Base Camp in Anantnag district, the IGP said that with the Yatra set to commence, police and other security forces have ensured all necessary measures are in place.
“In comparison to last year, this time we have ensured further multi-layered and in-depth security arrangements so that the Yatra is conducted in a safe and smooth manner,” he said.
Birdi said that the entire Yatra route across Kashmir has been divided into different zones and sectors, with each area following a standard operating procedure (SOP) drill.
“These drills are aimed at refining the response to any contingency. They are being conducted across Kashmir-whether at camps, along road sections, or in interior areas-so that responsibilities are clearly defined and agencies are better prepared to deal with emergency situations,” he added.
The IGP emphasized the role of locals in the successful conduct of any pilgrimage, stating that public cooperation is key to the success and safety of the Yatra.
“The Yatra becomes successful due to the support of the locals. We have spoken to people, and they are eagerly waiting to welcome the pilgrims, offer services, and contribute to a successful Yatra,” he said.
Meanwhile, as part of the Yatra security arrangements, Police in Anantnag intensified the census and verification of temporary highland shelters used by nomadic communities during seasonal migration-in the upper reaches of Anantnag.
“The initiative, which has been underway for over a year, is being regularly updated to ensure thorough documentation and oversight of these remote locations. This step is part of broader efforts to strengthen security, maintain situational awareness, and ensure the safety of pilgrims. Police teams are conducting door-to-door verification and interacting with inhabitants to build trust and enhance coordination,” police said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General of Police, North Kashmir Range, Maqsood-ul-Zaman, today conducted a detailed security review at the Shadipora Transit Camp in Bandipora district.
The DIG was accompanied by SSP Bandipora Harmeet Singh, CO 45 Bn CRPF Apoorwa, CO SSB Adhoc 16 Bn Shashi Shekhar, CO SSB Adhoc 17 Bn Kastoori Lal, SDPO Sumbal Mohd Amin, SHO Sumbal Police Station, along with senior officers from J&K Police, CRPF, and SSB.
The inspection focused heavily on mock drills conducted at the camp, where all agencies practiced real-time scenario responses including crowd surges, emergency situations, and evacuations to test inter-agency coordination.
