SRINAGAR, July 8: Police today said it has launched a special drive against beggars who have swarmed the Srinagar city these days causing annoyance to the public and arrested 37 local and non-local beggars.
A police spokesman said on the directions of SSP Srinagar, Amit Kumar, City police launched a special drive against the beggars.
“A number of public delegations had apprised SSP Srinagar about the mushroom growth of beggars in city who create nuisance at public places and places of worship. The menace of begging is assuming alarming proportions in city and other districts,” the spokesman said.
The spokesman said all the arrested beggars were produced before the local magistrates under Jammu and Kashmir Beggary Act, 1960 who have ordered their push back to their native places.
