RAJOURI, June 19: Scores of students from Government Degree College (GDC) Rajouri today staged a peaceful sit-in protest against what they termed as “unjust and rigid” admission criteria set by the University of Jammu for entry into the fifth semester.
The protest led to a brief blockade of the main Rajouri road, disrupting vehicular movement and daily activities in the town.

Raising slogans against the university administration, the protesting students expressed strong resentment over the existing admission policy.
The criteria laid out by Jammu University require candidates to pass the first and second semesters in full, secure a minimum of 50% credits in the third semester, and clear all internal assignments of the fourth semester to qualify for admission into the fifth semester.
“These criteria are excessively rigid and have placed unnecessary academic pressure on students who are otherwise capable and eager to continue their studies but being denied the opportunity due to these unreasonable conditions,” said a student.
As tensions escalated, Station House Officer (SHO) Rajouri, Inspector Abid Hussain Shah, along with his team, reached the spot to pacify the agitated students. He assured them that their grievances would be forwarded to the appropriate higher authorities for consideration.
The protest ended peacefully following the assurance from police officials. However, the students warned that if the University of Jammu fails to revise the admission criteria, they will be compelled to launch a foot march to Jammu and stage a mass protest in front of the university campus.
Meanwhile, activists of ABVP J&K unit also held protest in Bishnah, Kathua, Udhampur and other areas in protest against the stringent admission criteria for the 5th semester.
Sunak Shrivats, State Secretary of ABVP, appealed the authorities to reconsider the eligibility criteria and allow students with a minimum 50 percent to be eligible for admission to the 5th semester.
