Tehran not interested in nuclear bomb but only energy, reiterates Iranian Prez

TEHRAN, June 16: Supporters of Tehran’s creation of nuclear weapons have no place in Iran’s politics, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Monday.

“It is absolutely certain that the policy (of the country), as the supreme leader of Iran has repeatedly pointed out, is that Iran will not receive nuclear weapons and will not even seek to create them.

“Anyone who takes a position that does not correspond to this policy has no place in the politics of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Pezeshkian said in a statement, according to its state media IRIB.

Iran, however, has the right to use nuclear energy and conduct nuclear research, he asserted.

“We have the right to use nuclear energy and [conduct] research in the nuclear sphere for the benefit of our society. No one can deprive us of this right,” Pezeshkian added.

Pezeshkian stated that the United States violated international law by allowing Israel to attack Iran.

On Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Tehran was ready to sign an agreement that would guarantee absence of nuclear weapons in Iran unless such an agreement deprives the country of its right to use nuclear energy.

While the US is open to negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme, it is staunchly opposed to any weaponisation of nuclear energy by the Islamic Republic, having repeatedly asked the regime to stop its uranium enrichment programme, which Tehran has refused.

Israel has stated repeatedly that Tehran can never be allowed to obtain a nuclear bomb, due to its opposition to Israel’s very existence. Since Friday, Tel Aviv has launched several strikes deep inside Iran, damaging its facilities as well as killing members of its top brass.

In response, Iran has launched a series of strikes against Israel, which has resulted in casualties. So far, both countries have refused to back down and following the recent Iranian strikes which killed five citizens, the Israel Defence Ministry has stated that now Iranian citizens will have to pay the price.
