JAMMU, June 3: Kashmiri Samiti Delhi, led by president Sumeer Chrungoo and former president L N Dhar, has firmly rejected former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s recent proposal to the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha regarding the “dignified return and rehabilitation” of Kashmiri Pandits.
In a strongly worded statement, the Samiti termed the proposal a “diversionary tactic” aimed at deflecting focus from the decades-long genocide, exodus and denial of justice to the Kashmiri Pandit community. It said the pain of targeted killings, threats, and the forced migration of Pandits in 1990 remains unresolved and cannot be addressed through symbolic political overtures.
The Samiti expressed deep concern over Mehbooba Mufti’s continued emphasis on a “political solution” to the Kashmir issue without an unequivocal condemnation of the terrorism that led to the Pandits’ displacement. The statement accused her of clinging to outdated narratives and opposing key demands of the Pandit community, such as their secure, one-place resettlement.
Rejecting the idea of a scattered return across the Valley, the Samiti reiterated its long-standing demand for a separate homeland within Kashmir as laid out in the 1991 Margdarshan Resolution. This vision includes a structured and secure return where Kashmiri Pandits can live with dignity, safety and full constitutional rights.
“No rehabilitation will be acceptable without first acknowledging the genocide and forced exodus of Kashmiri Pandits,” the Samiti stated, adding that proposals lacking this foundation are politically opportunistic and insensitive.
The organization called upon the Government of India and the Lieutenant Governor to dismiss any proposals not aligned with the community’s legitimate aspirations. It emphasized that true reconciliation must begin with acknowledgment, justice, and a commitment to restoring the cultural and constitutional rights of the displaced community – not political tokenism.
