JAMMU, May 18: Former Deputy Mayor Baldev Singh Billawaria today warned the Power Department over the ongoing power crisis in Jammu, particularly in view of the severe summer heat and its impact on the general public.
Addressing during a press conference, Billawaria expressed deep concern over the extended power cuts, which have been affecting several areas including Bishnah, Gangyal, Digiana, Kunjwani and surrounding localities.
He said, “the Bishnah power grid, which has a capacity of 50 MW, did not properly work and as a result, the electrical load was redirected to some parts of Gangyal. However, these areas are unable to bear the excess load, causing power outages lasting up to 16 to 18 hours daily.”
“These power cuts are severely affecting senior citizens, children, and patients who cannot withstand the current heatwave conditions,” Billawaria said.
He also noted that despite the Central Government having sanctioned substantial funds for improving power infrastructure in Jammu & Kashmir, mismanagement by the Power Development Department (PDD) has led to poor distribution and system failures.
The Deputy Mayor acknowledged the cooperation of the public, particularly in accepting and utilizing smart electric meters, which were installed with the assurance of 24/7 power supply.
“The people of Jammu are paying their electricity bills regularly and in good faith. They deserve uninterrupted power, especially during these challenging summer months,” he said.
Billawaria further called upon higher authorities to take urgent and strict action against those responsible for the mismanagement and urged the Electricity Department to restore the power supply at the earliest.
“It is the duty of the administration to provide essential services like electricity and water,” he said and added that he stands with the people to ensure that they get basic facilities and will continue to work towards solving every issue of the public.
Former Corporator Neena Gupta and Prerna Nanda were also present during the press conference.
