JAMMU, May 12: National Conference (NC) additional general secretary and former Minister, Ajay Kumar Sadhotra today visited various shelter camps housing residents displaced due to recent cross-border shelling from Pakistan along the International Border and Line of Control in the Jammu region.
At the Sahib Bandgi Ashram Shelter Lodgment Centre in Mishriwala, where several families from the Pargwal and Palanwalla sectors have been accommodated, Sadhotra met the affected individuals and shared his concern over their hardships. He assured them of continued assistance from both the administration and civil society.
Sadhotra pointed to the response of the Omar Abdullah-led Government in addressing the needs of those impacted by the shelling. He noted that various voluntary organizations have stepped in to provide shelter, food, and other essential services to the displaced, helping to ease their difficult circumstances.
He described the displacement as a tragic consequence of continuing tensions along the border, while expressing hope that the ceasefire understanding between India and Pakistan would bring about stability. “Peace must be given a fair chance. The lives and livelihoods of innocent civilians cannot be held hostage to geopolitical tensions. Restraint must replace violence and uncertainty,” he said.
He also spoke about the role of the armed forces in countering recent air attacks targeting civilian areas, saying the response had discouraged further escalation.
Referring to CM Omar Abdullah’s recent visit to affected areas, Sadhotra said such outreach strengthens the connection between the people and their elected representatives during times of crisis. Families staying at the camp acknowledged the efforts made to ensure their safety and access to essential services.
Sadhotra reaffirmed the NC’s commitment to stand with every affected family and urged broader support for peace and relief efforts.
Others who accompanied Sadhotra were Raghubir Singh Manhas (district president), Radhir Singh (district vice president), Charan Dass, Gurdev Singh, Charanjeet Singh and Kulwant Singh.
