Srinagar, Apr 24: A deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 tourists and a local guide has sent shockwaves through Kashmir’s tourism sector, but strong local support, heightened security, and continued hospitality are helping to reassure visitors and prevent a mass exodus from the valley.
The attack occurred at the popular Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, one of Kashmir’s prime tourist destinations. The tragedy sent shockwaves across the country, with many visitors cutting short their stay or cancelling upcoming trips. Scenes of frightened tourists rushing to leave the Valley were widely seen following the attack.
However, within a day, the mood in some parts of Kashmir began to shift. At the famous hill station of Gulmarg, long queues of tourists waiting for the gondola ride have brought signs of hope. “I recently visited the airport and met tourists who did not cut short their visit. Today also, nearly 4,000 people took the Gondola ride,” Director of Tourism Raja Yaqoob told Excelsior. He said while there were some cancellations, there is nothing like a mass exodus. “Hotel occupancy remains at 87-88 percent,” he said.

Yaqoob admitted there was panic after the attack but said the situation is stabilizing. “The government is trying to create a sense of security among the tourists,” he said.
Tour operators confirmed that while Pahalgam has seen a dip in footfall due its temporary closure, other locations such as Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Doodhpathri continue to draw large crowds. “I think the support of the locals has encouraged tourists to carry on with their plans,” a local tour operator said.
Dr. Beena, a tourist from Kerala, said her group of 49 was devastated by the news. “We heard about the attack that day in the evening. It is unfortunate and should not have happened. Kashmir should not be attacked. We are staying back and will complete our planned trip.”
Kamran Ahmad from Uttar Pradesh, who was in Ganderbal and heading to Sonamarg, said, “What happened in Pahalgam is condemnable and will affect the tourist season. But locals are ensuring every possible support. We would not be able to visit Pahalgam, but we’ll go to other places.”
Tourist Rutul Bhat from Gujarat said, “There is peace here thanks to army presence and local support. Except for Pahalgam, you can go anywhere. Initially we were panicked, but now we feel safe. Everyone from the bus driver to the hotel owner has been supportive.”
Rupul, a tourist from Mumbai, added, “There was some panic yesterday, but we have full confidence in Prime Minister Modi and Amit Shah. We rested on the day of the attack, but after that, there was no fear. People here are helpful in every possible way.”
