The slew of welfare measures announced by the J&K Government marks a significant stride towards inclusive development and social empowerment. These initiatives demonstrate a firm resolve to uplift the most vulnerable segments of society-economically disadvantaged families, women, the elderly, widows, persons with disabilities, and the transgender community. Foremost among these is the enhancement of financial assistance under the State Marriage Assistance Scheme, with eligible girls from AAY (Antyodaya Anna Yojana) households now receiving Rs 75,000-up from the earlier Rs 50,000. This increase not only provides critical financial relief but also affirms the Government’s commitment to upholding the dignity of women, especially in low-income families. Direct Benefit Transfer ensures transparency and timely disbursement. Equally impactful is the decision to distribute additional food grains free of cost to AAY households with four or more members. In a region where food security remains a concern for many, this measure is a lifeline, ensuring that no family goes hungry. The Government’s focus on ensuring both nutritional support and financial empowerment reflects a holistic welfare vision.
Pension enhancements across the board-under both the National Social Assistance Programme and Integrated Social Security Scheme-are another commendable step. By raising pensions for all age groups and categories, the Government is not just offering monetary aid but also extending a gesture of dignity and respect to the elderly, widows, disabled individuals, and trans persons. Furthering women’s empowerment, the launch of the Zero-Ticket Travel Initiative for women on public buses removes a significant mobility barrier. This not only facilitates access to education and employment but also fosters independence and safety for women. Additionally, the Government’s decision to waive stamp duty on property transfers within blood relations underlines a people-first governance approach-reducing financial burdens during intergenerational asset transfers. All these initiatives, effective from April 1, 2025, collectively paint a picture of a Government delivering on its promises. They reinforce a narrative of social justice, care, and inclusive progress. As the region continues to evolve, such compassionate policymaking will be pivotal in building trust and fostering long-term stability and development across J&K.
