Tony leads delegation to CS on Ammunition Depot issue

JAMMU, Feb 27: Senior Congress leader and DDC member Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony here today led a delegation of prominent residents of Chowadhi, Mohalla Messi and Mohalla Mehra to meet the Chief Secretary (CS), Atal Dulloo.
The delegation raised serious concerns over the proposed construction of ammunition depot by J&K Police at Chowadhi and apprised the Chief Secretary of the grave threat it may pose to over 400 families living in the area.
Tony said that despite an alternate site being identified in the same Chowadhi area, Police personnel are adamant to proceed with the depot’s construction at the existing location.
He said that under Works of Defence Act, 1903, specific safety distances are mandated for construction around ammunition depots to ensure the safety of life and property and the same law applies here also.
“Police is hell-bent to construct the depot and for the past five days, work has also been going on unabated despite the Tehsildar, deputed by the Deputy Commissioner Jammu has instructed to halt the work,” Tony maintained asking, “Why senior officials in the government are turning a blind eye to such blatant lawlessness?”
The delegation included Anjum Choudhary, Ghulam Rasool, Anwar, Mohd Aftab, Haji Khursheed, Sohail Choudhary, Riyaz Khan, Talib Hussain, Rehmat Ali, Mekbol, Qasim, Anjum Ali and many others.
Tony warned intensified protests if the authorities fail to act immediately.
The Chief Secretary assured the delegation that the matter would be looked into on urgent basis and necessary action would be taken to safeguard the interests of the residents.
Later, the delegation also met Divisional Commissioner, Jammu and submitted the same memorandum, as recommended by the CS for further necessary action in this regard on priority basis.
