WASHINGTON, Feb 25: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States wanted to hold another meeting with Russian negotiators to have them outline Moscow’s conditions for agreeing to end the conflict in Ukraine.
“We’ve got to get them both to the table, starting with the Russians – so we met with them last week and the basic question of that meeting was, ‘Are you interested in ending this conflict or not ‘ They said they would be, under the right conditions. We didn’t discuss what those conditions were. So the next step is to meet with them again at some point, with the right group of people in the room, and begin to outline what would it take for Russia to stop a war ” he said in an interview to Breitbart News website on Monday.
The US will also discuss conditions with the Ukrainian side, Rubio added.
The defense secretary criticized the UN General Assembly’s resolution on Ukraine, saying it was “antagonistic” and ran counter to the efforts made by the US to stop the conflict and negotiate.
High-level Russian-US talks were conducted in Riyadh last Tuesday. Russia was represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov and RDIF fund’s CEO Kirill Dmitriev. The United States was represented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff. Ushakov said that the talks focused on how to begin negotiations on Ukraine. The Russian and US delegations assessed the results as positive.
