REASI, Feb 20: Reasi Police have arrested an ex- militant, who was allegedly involved in several militancy related incidents and had been absconding for the last 18 years.
Identified as Anwar Ali Chouhan (40), son of Haji Nizam Din Chouhan alias Jamsheer, originally a resident of Gujjar Kothian, Talwara, Reasi, and presently residing at Kharpura, Anantnag, the accused had joined the Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit in 2001 and remained active for seven years.
He later surrendered in 2007 in Kashmir but subsequently went underground, evading arrest, which was required in multiple high-profile criminal and militancy-related cases registered at Police Station Reasi.
Consequently, the court was approached and proceedings under sections 82 and 83 CrPC were initiated against him. Despite these measures, his whereabouts remained unknown.
On the directions of SSP Reasi, Paramvir Singh, a special police team was constituted under the leadership of SHO Reasi, supervised by Dy SP Headquarters and Addl SP Reasi, which conducted repeated raids and finally arrested the accused from a forest area near Gujjar Kothian, Talwara.
According to Police, the arrested accused was wanted in case FIR No. 04/2006 under sections 307, 120B, 121(A) RPC, and 7/27 Arms Act ; FIR No. 57/2006 under sections 302, 307, 120B, 121(A), 212, 216 RPC, 7/27 Arms Act, and 3 JKPS Act, registered at P/S Reasi.
