RAJOURI, Feb 20: The death of a young woman due to alleged medical negligence at GMC Hospital Rajouri sparked strong protest by relatives and the people of the area here today.
The incident led to a nine-hour long protest by the bereaved family and local residents, demanding justice and strict action against the medical staff responsible for it.

According to the family members, Kirna Devi (28), wife of Yash Pal was admitted to GMC Rajouri on February 18 with labour pain. However, they alleged that no doctor was available initially. They said as per doctors the unborn child had already died in the womb, but another attending doctor assured them that the baby was still breathing. The family accused the doctors of misleading them and delaying the necessary medical procedures. They alleged that after being administered an injection, Kirna Devi passed away, and only then did the doctors proceeded with an operation.
As the situation escalated, the family staged a protest from 3 am to 1 pm, blocking the hospital premises and demanding an impartial investigation. DDC Member Budhal, Shazia Kousar, also reached the hospital and urged the authorities to conduct a thorough probe into the matter.
In response to the outcry, Dr AS Bhatia, Principal, GMC Rajouri assured people of an impartial enquiry and delivery of justice to everyone and constituted a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the circumstances leading to Kirna Devi’s death.
The committee, chaired by Medical Superintendent Dr Shamim Ahmed, includes; Head of Department (HoD), Obstetrics & Gynecology, GMC Rajouri, Head of Department (HoD), Surgery, GMC Rajouri, Head of Department (HoD), Anesthesia, GMC Rajouri and In-charge HoD, Forensic Medicine, GMC Rajouri.
The committee has been directed to submit a comprehensive report within a week, following which strict legal action will be taken against those found responsible.
Meanwhile, Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC) Raj Kumar Thapa also visited the scene and assured a time-bound magisterial probe to ascertain the cause of death of Kirna Devi, wife of Yash Pal of Mandir Gala village of Rajouri.
The ADDC assured stern action if the probe pointed to medical negligence on the part of doctors and paramedical staff. After this they called off their protest.
