GMC Pediatrics Deptt observes Childhood Cancer Day

JAMMU, Feb 15: Department of Pediatrics, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu and IAP J&K Branch observed “International Childhood Cancer Day” (ICCD) by organizing a cancer awareness program at Government SMGS Hospital, here today.
The programme was attended by doctors, paramedical & nursing staff, cancer survivors, pediatric cancer patients undergoing treatment in the Department of Pediatrics at SMGS Hospital Jammu and their parents.
Principal, GMC Jammu, Dr Ashutosh Gupta was the chief guest of the program. Speaking on this occasion, he highlighted the role of non- NGOs for providing social, emotional and financial support to the families of poor cancer patients enabling them to get their children treated.
Dr Sanjeev Kumar Digra, Consultant In-charge Pediatric Cancer Ward in his welcome address apprised the gathering that the treatment and permanent cure of childhood cancer is possible in majority of cases. He stressed upon that every child detected with cancer should get a fair chance of survival through appropriate treatment.
He informed the gathering that the Government is providing support for cancer patients under schemes like PMJAY and also with the support of various NGOs, free of cost high-end tests and treatment for children with cancer have been made available in SMGS Hospital.
Dr Avinash (Junior Resident, Pediatrics) delivered a lecture about early sign & symptoms of cancers in children while Suruchi Sharma (Social Worker and Counselor at Pediatric Cancer Ward) talked about the myths associated with childhood cancers.
The proceedings of the program were conducted by Dr Vidushi Bhat (Senior Resident, Pediatrics) and vote of thanks was delivered by Rashika (Dietician, Pediatric cancer patients in SMGS Hospital).
Other prominent persons present included Dr Dara Singh (Medical Superintendent, SMGS Hospital), Dr Meena Sidhu (HoD Department of Blood Transfusion), Dr Rajiv Gupta (HoD Medical Oncology, State Cancer Institute Jammu), Dr Deepak Kumar (MS, State Cancer Institute Jammu), Shagun from Mission Shakti, Ashok (Maharaja Hari Singh Foundation) and Dr Navneet Kour (founder chairperson, NGO SUPPORT).
