CAIRO, Feb 15: Lebanese authorities have detained more than 25 people in connection with an attack on a convoy of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Lebanese Interior Minister Ahmad al-Hajjar said on Saturday.
Earlier in the day, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the attack on the peacekeepers and said the attackers would be punished.
“This attack is a crime, and we will pursue the perpetrators with full seriousness to ensure their arrest. We have more than 25 detainees and we will verify which of the detainees were involved [in the attack],” al-Hajjar was quoted by Lebanon’s LBCI broadcaster as saying.
On Friday evening, UNIFIL said that their peacekeepers were attacked on their way to Beirut airport. One of the vehicles was set on fire and UNIFIL’s outgoing deputy force commander, who was returning home after completing his mission, was injured. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that such attacks could be considered war crimes and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
