In Jammu District, the agitating jewellers gathered at Chowk Chabutra area and resorted to sloganeering in favour of their demands.
One of the agitating jewellers said, “Today, around 2.5 lakh people associated with jewellery business have shut their shops from Kathua to Poonch in support of a jeweller whose shop was looted in the broad daylight by two persons.”
“We’re protesting police’s failure to make any arrest in the case despite passage of eight days since the commissioning of the crime,” he said.
Another jeweller said that on the request of the police administration, most jewellers have already installed the CCTV cameras and deputed security guards outside their shops but still the thieves are targeting their shops in defiance of the police.
“So, the responsibility is on police to give protection to the jewellers now. But they have miserably failed in performing their job,” he said.
He also requested the administration to issue licensed weapons to goldsmith fraternity for their own protection.
He said that it is the season of marriages and their community members are struggling to open their shops fearing attacks by the thieves.
“The police must strive hard to win the trust of the people,” he demanded.
