Security forces, including the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) intensified efforts to track down the militants responsible for the attack.
Scores of locals in Behi Bagh village and adjoining areas have been questioned by the security forces during the searches that have been going on since last night.
A massive search operation was launched in the village and surrounding areas. Security personnel are combing orchards, residential areas, and suspected militant hideouts.
An official said that no stone is being left unturned to trace out the attackers. Security forces are using surveillance drones and sniffer dogs for tracking them down.
Hundreds of people from the area have been detained for questioning by the security forces. Majority of them are the former militants and former Over Ground Workers (OGWs) and some of them are those who made calls that evening in the area.
The investigators suspect that the attackers may have used logistical support from locals to carry out the attack.
Security agencies are also questioning the suspected individuals and are also using technical evidence to trace out the attackers.
The attack took place last evening when militants fired upon Manzoor Ahmad, a former soldier, in Behi Bagh village. He sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed. His wife and niece were also injured in the attack and undergoing treatment at Army’s Base Hospital at Badami Bagh Cantonment in Srinagar.
Senior police and Army officials rushed to the spot immediately after the attack to assess the situation. The area was immediately cordoned off, and reinforcements were deployed to prevent the attackers from escaping.
