BISHNAH, Jan 27: Senior National Conference leader and former MLA Bimla Luthra underscored the crucial role of women in the upcoming Panchayat and Local Bodies elections in Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing their active participation in governance and decision-making.
She was addressing a well-attended meeting at Palate in Bishnah Assembly constituency, where she highlighted the need for greater political representation of women in Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting was presided over by Rajni Devi, Provincial working president of the Women’s Wing, JKNC, while Bimla Luthra was the chief guest.
Earlier, local women apprised Luthra of the hardships they face due to the lack of adequate welfare initiatives and necessary facilities.
Expressing her deep concern, Bimla Luthra stated that although women constitute nearly 50% of the voting populace in Jammu and Kashmir, their representation in governance continues to be neglected. She strongly criticized the previous government, accusing it of failing to deliver on promises made for the welfare of women. She lamented the lack of employment opportunities, healthcare facilities, and women-centric policies, which have left the female populace struggling with unaddressed issues.
“The previous regimes did nothing substantial for the welfare of women folk. However, women have high hopes from the present government led by Omar Abdullah, who has always championed their rights and upliftment. We need to ensure that women play a decisive role in governance and policymaking,” she asserted.
Former MLA urged the women of the area to unite and actively participate in the democratic process to strengthen their voice.
“The future of our society depends on empowered women. I appeal to every woman in this area to come forward, contest elections, and take charge of their rights and development,” she added.
The meeting witnessed the presence of several prominent women leaders, including Joginder Kaur, Sapna Gill, and Bharti Devi, who reiterated their commitment to mobilizing women for greater political involvement.
