Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Karra said the Government currently appears powerless to meet the expectations of the people. “Without statehood, this Government and its representative character remain incomplete. Once statehood is restored, all the issues confronting the people can be addressed,” he said.
The JKPCC Chief said that developmental programs cannot be completed without statehood. “All these initiatives are based on authority. My consistent effort and insistence have been for the restoration of statehood. When I first raised this issue, no one was talking about it. Today, everyone agrees that statehood should be the priority. I advocated for statehood even before the elections,” he added.
Karra criticized unilateral decisions made without consulting elected representatives, calling them a violation of democratic norms. “Elected representatives reflect the emotions, feelings, and desires of the people. Their input is essential to translate these into actionable policies. This unilateral decision-making process that was prevalent before the elections must stop,” he said.
The Congress president urged the administration, bureaucrats, and officers to acknowledge the presence of an elected Government. “They must realize that elected representatives are now in place, and their role in governance is critical,” he said.
Commenting on the challenges faced by the people, including power and food grain shortages and rising unemployment, Karra attributed these issues to the absence of an elected government over the past decade.
“What we are witnessing today is the cumulative impact of 10 years without an elected government since 2014. To resolve these issues, we need authority, and that is only possible with statehood. Until statehood is restored, the expectations of the people will remain unmet,” he said.
