Strategic dialogue

China has taken note of the fact that the sixth round of China-India strategic dialogue has taken place at a time when very important election is underway in India. This should convince China that India attaches much significance to bilateral relations with China. The two largest populations in the world, both moving along the path of development, have much to share as much is common to them. Widening the canvas of bilateral relations, China has given a peep into its vision of China-India relations in future by categorising it into three levels of cooperation viz. the bilateral level, regional level and international level. While talking of the region, on which Chinese side has laid some emphasis, the issue of Afghanistan, US withdrawal and revival of Taliban could be an important subject for bilateral discussion. China is also concerned about the separatist movement going on in her eastern autonomous province of Xinjiang where Uyghur, the ethnic Turkic Sunni Muslims are demanding separation and Beijing has come down with heavy hand on the movement. Obviously, the situation that emerges in Afghanistan after the pull out of American troops will have its impact on Uyghur separation movement. Iran’s nuclear issue and the situation in Syria are also other important areas on which the two sides will be reflecting in part.
Indian side has expressed its concerns once again on USD 35 billion annual trade deficits with China and seek major openings for IT and pharmaceutical products in Chinese markets besides investments from China. The strategic dialogue being held in cordial atmosphere is another indication that the two countries would want to cooperate in a number of enterprises and stabilize bilateral relations to play bigger role in maintaining peace in the region.
