Sir,
Refer news item, Govt adopts double standard on conservation of Jammu lakes’ DE Apr 1.
The amount of money spent on upkeep of water bodies in Kashmir in comparison to Jammu region speaks about discriminatory attitude of the Government. The water bodies in Kashmir are equally important as those existing elsewhere in the State. There should not be one set of rules for one region, and other set for other region. Had Government been sincere towards Jammu region, it should have in first place brought lakes in Jammu region under LAWDA, a pre requisite for allocating money for upkeep of lakes.
The lakes in Jammu region are not in a good condition as can be seen from their shrinking size. Both main lakes—Mansar and Surinsar it is reported from time to time, are shrinking.
There is urgent need to save these water bodies from extinction. These lakes are not only source of water for people in this region, but main attraction for Jammuites.
These are the places children go for excursion and recreation. The Government should formulate a policy for their maintenance by bringing them under the ambit of LAWDA
Yours etc….
