EC on transparency

The country is going to polls vey soon and the Election Commission is thoroughly galvanized into action. One important aspect with which it is seriously concerned is of transparency in parties providing funds to prospective candidates to fight election. As part of this exercise the Election Commission has held a meeting with account auditors of all parties in the country to convey to them some new guidelines which they are expected to follow strictly. They will be required to file financial reports by 30 October 2014. The main purpose of the EC is to control the flow of black money during elections. The new financial guidelines have been got framed by the EC in close consultation with the Institute of Chartered Accountants. The poll panel interacted with the auditors and income tax officials and explained to them the broad features of financial aspect of polling exercise
We appreciate all those steps of the Election Commission that would plug all possibilities of electoral candidates floating black money to win the votes or contrive their win through clandestine means. More often than not many times more than the authorised amount is being spent by candidates in the election fray. This is intimidation of voters who can get swayed by the temptation of receiving some small or big money. There should be very strict control and accountability for candidates in spending on their election campaigns.  Another important benefit of new guidelines is that the EC wants level playing with all political parties in the country. We have full faith in EC’s efforts of bringing transparency to the financial code that will be implemented in the general elections 2014. We expect that the State Election Commission will take adequate steps of ensuring that the code is implemented in the Sate election exercise in letter and in spirit.
