Bilqees Aara, 34, has garnered widespread admiration as Kashmir’s “Blood Woman” for her remarkable dedication to blood donation, spanning from 2012 to 2024, during which she generously donated 35 points of blood.
During an event, Bilqees, who is a mother of three children hailing from Kupwara’s Gund Chaboutra shared that her commitment to this noble cause is not merely a duty but a deeply ingrained passion, driven by the teachings of her faith and a profound desire to help others in need.
Despite her humble background and primary occupation as an accredited Asha worker, Bilqees has tirelessly extended her assistance to those requiring blood transfusions.
Her journey began with a personal experience where she saved the life of a relative in critical condition through her timely donation.
“This moment ignited a lifelong commitment to serving her community through blood donation, a pledge she has faithfully honored ever since,” she said.
Reflecting on the changing landscape of blood donation practices in Kashmir, Bilqees acknowledged the transformative role of technology, particularly the internet, in facilitating quicker communication between donors and recipients.
She said that this advancement has significantly expedited the process of matching donors with those in urgent need, thereby saving numerous lives.
Despite her invaluable contributions, Bilqees expressed disappointment over the lack of formal recognition from Governmental authorities.
She called for the implementation of special incentives, such as insurance coverage and ration cards, to encourage more individuals to participate in voluntary blood donation drives.
Addressing concerns about her own health and dietary habits, Bilqees reassured that her regular blood donations have not impacted her well-being negatively.
