Empowering Cooperatives, Enriching Lives

In a bid to bolster Jammu and Kashmir’s agricultural sector and unlock its immense potential, the Administrative Council’s recent approval of a scheme to incentivize the establishment of small food processing units by cooperatives marks a commendable step. This initiative, offering substantial financial assistance and streamlined loan procedures, holds the promise of empowering cooperatives, enriching lives, and fostering a more robust and resilient agricultural ecosystem. The crux of the scheme lies in its accessibility and attractive incentives. Cooperatives registered in J&K can access loans of up to 90 percent of the project cost, capped at Rs. 9 lakh, from cooperative banks. The Government will also provide 50 percent financial assistance directly to the bank on behalf of the cooperative department upon successful operationalization of the unit within a year. Additionally, the Government will shoulder the entire interest burden on the loan, further reducing the financial risks for cooperatives.
This comprehensive support system extends beyond mere financial aid. The scheme also establishes a robust institutional mechanism for implementation and monitoring, ensuring transparency and efficient utilisation of resources. Committees dedicated to the formulation, evaluation, and approval of proposals streamline the process and provide cooperatives with the necessary guidance and support. The potential benefits of this initiative are multifaceted. By establishing food processing units, cooperatives can add value to agricultural produce, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance market access for farmers. This translates to increased income for farmers, improved food security, and the creation of new job opportunities, particularly within the cooperative sector and allied industries. Furthermore, the scheme fosters local entrepreneurship and empowers cooperatives to play a more active role in the agricultural value chain. This not only strengthens the sector but also injects a sense of ownership and responsibility among farmers, leading to more sustainable and productive agricultural practices.
