JAMMU, Feb 5: Natrang Director Balwant Thakur was felicitated by the Governor NN Vohra during 101st Indian Science Congress being held at University of Jammu for the excellent presentation of Mega Cultural Show “Rangla Jammu”.
Natrang presented back to back two shows of ‘Mega Cultural Show’ which vibrated the jam-packed General Zorawar Singh Auditorium with the electrifying performance by 150 artists which included the top celebrities of theatre and television.
Gifted with a creative literary impulse, rare aesthetic vision, directorial elegance and above all a fine human being the grand acclaimed thespian Balwant Thakur is a man of myriad traits.
Born in 1960 in a sleepy village of J&K he spent his childhood in the panoramic ambience of hills with their beauty and freshness still rejuvenating his mind and soul.
A Law Graduate Balwant is Post Graduate in Mass Communication with a three years HRD Ministry National senior Fellowship Award in cultural research to his credit.
Rightfully decorated with the Sanskriti award-1992 for Children Theatre and prestigious National Sangeet Natak Akademi, the coveted Padamshree honour was bestowed on him last year. Balwant Thakur is one of the few names of the Country who have made a unique contribution in establishing a new Children’s Theatre idiom. He has created over two dozen drama spectacles which really represent the ethos, aspirations of the society as a whole.
Besides the ‘All India Citizen Award’ in the year 1994 and ‘Abhinayak Samman’ in 1996, best director awards for the year 1985, 1986, besides the ‘Gurushree’ and ‘Sapatrishi Samman’ in 1999 and 2001, Dogra Rattan Award, 2005, Best Director Award Doordarshan 2005, Rashtriya Gaurav Samman-2010, Maharaja Gulab Singh Memorial Award-2011 and Rabindra Nath Tagore Samman-2012.
Despite this galaxy of awards and honour humble Balwant Thakur is an epitome of simplicity.
Thakur has made his presentations on performing arts in over 75 countries abroad besides India.
