CISF jawan killed, another injured in Srinagar

*Army foils infiltration bid, kills one

SRINAGAR, Sept 23: A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) man was killed and another critically injured in a militant attack in Srinagar’s busy market place today while Army foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Macchil sector in the frontier district of Kupwara and killed an infiltrator.
SSP Srinagar, Ashiq Bukhari said here that one of the CISF jawans was killed and another critically injured when militants fired at them from point blank range near Naaz Cinema in Hazuribagh area of Srinagar at around 10:30 a.m.
These CISF men were buying fish and vegetables at the busy market place outside Naaz Cinema when militants fired at them from silencer fitted pistols. Leaving the two security men in a pool of blood, militants fled from scene.
The injured CISF men were removed to hospital where one of them was declared brought dead while critically injured was shifted to SKIMS hospital for treatment.
A police spokesman identified the dead jawan as Head Constable D Nayak son of Gopi Nath Nayak resident of Hatpora, Bansagadh, Balasuri in Orissa. The injured has been identified as Constable Mukesh Kumar son of Sher Singh resident of Bhalwa, Jamasat, Muzaffar-Nagar, Uttar Pradesh.
The attack created panic in the area and senior police officers rushed to the spot to assess the situation. Police cordoned off the area and questioned the people including hawkers. However, no one was arrested or detained.
A senior police officer told Excelsior that the attack was carried out by two Hizbul Mujahideen militants who came on a motorcycle. He, however, said that the militants came from outside the city either from Sopore in North Kashmir or Tral in South Kashmir.
“Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for carrying out the attack”, a spokesman of the outfit told a local news agency here.
This is the second major attack of the militants since June 24, when militant killed eight soldiers at Hyderpora and injuring 14 others a day before Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s visit to Srinagar.
This is the second attack in the area as militants shot dead two police men on June 23 this year at Hari Singh High Street, Srinagar, hardly 500 metres from today’s spot.
In another incident along the LoC in Macchil sector of Kupwara district, Army today foiled an infiltration bid by militants and killed one infiltrator.
An Army spokesman said here that the troops deployed along the LoC in Macchil sector noticed the movement of a group of militants and challenged them. One militant was killed while the other fled under the cover of darkness.
“During the searches of the area, Army recovered an AK-47 rifle, one magazine and 30 rounds and warlike stores. The operation in the area is going on”, the spokesman added.
