JAMMU, Nov 11: Citizens’ Forum has demanded the Government to bring improvement in its Mid-Day Meal scheme to provide a proper balanced diet to the school children.
President of the Forum, RK Chadha said that the poor school children in the Union Territory are suffering with malnutrition and the way the Mid-Day Meal scheme is being implemented in the UT, it has failed to achieve its objective.
He said a child requires at least 800 calories per day but in the Government schools of the J&K, the children are not getting even 150 calories as the food being provided to them lacks requisite nutrients. He alleged that the there is not proper kitchen in the schools and the food is cooked in unhygienic conditions.
“The school children are provided only ‘kichdi’, ‘chawal-dal’ or ‘roti-sabzi’ on alternate days and no fruits, eggs and other nutritious food items are given to them,” Chadha said and appealed the Government to establish huge community kitchens in every 15-20 km to provide packed food to the schools falling in that area so that children may get hygienic and nutritious food.
He further demanded organizing medical check-up camps on monthly basis in all the Government schools to monitor the health of the school children to check malnutrition and other diseases in them.
