POONCH, July 9: Heavy rain in Poonch and its adjoining areas created havoc within two hours, resulting into flash floods in nallahs and water logging in lanes and roads of the town, inviting strong public protests while two girls, three motor-cycles, scooter and an auto-rikshaw got washed away in different incidents today.
Heavy downpour started in Poonch town and adjoining areas including Mandi and Loran at around 5 pm. Within two hours many lanes and roads were over flooded. The water entered into the houses and shops of the people as many drains were choked. Even in the lanes 3 to 5 ft water was witnessed at several places. The movement of the people was restricted. The water also entered the FCI godown and caused damage to food grains stored there.
In Sukka Kantha area of the city, falling in Ward No. 1 of Poonch, an autorikshaw, three motor-cycles, a scooty and a scooter of the locals were washed away as the lane witnessed nearly 5 ft water. They were washed away to the nearby Poonch river. The roads were also over flooded with massive water. The people then came out on the road at 2-3 places and held demonstration against local administration. They alleged that due to poor sanitation this problem has occurred. Later, the senior officers from the Administration visited affected areas.
In another incident, two minor girls Gulshan Akhtar (14), student of 9th and her sister Shafiqa Akhtar, daughters of Saif Din were washed away in a nallah at Loran this morning. These girls had to join picnic party organized by the school. The girls had gone across the nallah to bring some eatables/ items. Both got washed away in flash flood. Later, body of Gulshan was recovered by the villagers. The other one was still missing. The school staff however, left for picnic with other children, causing resentment among the local villagers.
