Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, June 1: The J&K BJP spokesperson Rajni Sethi has urged the Government to review the New Excise Policy as the same is not in the larger interests of the people of Jammu and it has hurt their religious sentiments at large with the result there are protests in every nook and corner of Jammu city against the opening of new wine shops.
In a statement issued here today she said the Jammu Kashmir Government approved the New Excise Policy 2021 -2022 which came into force on April 1, 2021 and will remain till March 31, 2022. The major difference amongst many between Old and New Excise Policy is that there is no mention of few important guidelines which are absolutely necessary in order to retain the status of Jammu as City of Temples and not just city of liquor vends. Many questions like how a school and a wine shop can have a common wall , or Bhairon Mandir will be with a wine shop just opposite to which is Gurudwara. Besides it in less than 100 meters distance of Hanuman Mandir, a Gurudwara and a Masjid and a wine shop within few meters of radius is even beyond ones imagination, she added.
Sethi said matter of fact is apparently every religious place in Jammu has a wine shop, within 100 to 300 metres of radius. Also earlier the people’s consent were taken into consideration before opening any new wine shop which is not mentioned in the current Excise Policy, due to which various residents of Jammu are furious against the New Excise Policy .People of Jammu wanted that the status of Jammu as City of Temples should be retained and Government should not only focus its sole interest on revenue collection . This will turn the future of next generation dark, she added.
She demanded an amendment keeping public interest in view be made at the earliest to restore the faith of the people in Government.
Sethi said that the Government should not play with the sentiments of the people by opening these liquor shops nearby temples, educational institutions as it was already mentioned that there should be a distant of 300 mtrs previously and after amendment it is100 mtrs only.
