JAMMU, Feb 8: Senior Congress leaders, Mula Ram and Hari Singh Chib have demanded early delimitation of Assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir and to create two new assembly constituencies from Gandhi Nagar and Jammu West constituencies.
Pinning high hopes on the Delimitation Commission which is all set to convene its first meeting later this month, the Congress leaders asserted that in view of the huge numbers of voters in these two constituencies, it is imperative that the Commission considers bifurcation of these two constituencies on priority.
In a joint statement issued today, former minister Mula Ram and Hari Singh Chib, president DCC Jammu Rural said that there are more than 1.70 lakh voters each in Gandhi Nagar and Jammu West Constituencies, respectively.
“There is dire need to bifurcate these assembly constituencies and creation of two new Assembly constituencies in Jammu city so that proper development and efficient grievances redressal mechanism is ensured,” they said.
“The Gandhi Nagar constituency should be split into two constituencies while one new constituency should also be created by bifurcating the Jammu West and Raipur- Domana Constituencies so that proper development takes place and the issues of people of these constituency be resolved in a time bound manner,” they added.
The senior leaders said that issues of common masses remain unheard and unresolved due to the large number of voters in these two constituencies.
Mula Ram and Chib further informed that the Delimitation Commission has decided to convene its first meeting with Associate Members on February 18 to discuss delimitation of Assembly constituencies in the Union Territory.
“We welcome the development and hope that the Commission under the chairmanship of Justice (Retired) Ranjana Prakash Desai takes into consideration all the relevant factors as it redraws the limits of assembly constituencies so that democratic equality for the residents of Jammu and Kashmir is ensured,” they said.
It may be recalled that while splitting Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories through the Reorganization Act, the Union Home Ministry had increased Assembly seats of Jammu and Kashmir by seven.
