Disappointed with CBI chief’s statement on autonomy: BJP

NEW DELHI, May 16:  The BJP today said it was ‘disappointed’ with CBI Director Ranjit Sinha’s reported statement on the autonomy of the probe agency.

“Instead of giving a statement on CBI’s full autonomy, he is giving statement that there should be some type of control on the probe agency,” BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain told reporters here.

Mr Hussain said the CBI chief had supported the Supreme Court’s observations against the probe agency’s functioning in connection with the coal scam.

The apex court had slammed the CBI and even called the probe agency a “caged parrot.”

“The BJP is disappointed with the CBI Director’s statement,” Mr Hussain said.

The spokesperson said the CBI chief was giving a clean chit to former Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal in connection with a bribery case though the probe into the matter was going on.

He said the BJP wanted that the CBI be free from the government’s influence.

Mr Hussain said there was “no expectation” from the Centre’s move to constitute a Group of Ministers (GoM) to decide on the CBI’s autonomy. He said there should be an independent body to decide on the matter.

Mr Hussain alleged that the Congress was running away from probe into various scams.

“The BJP demands CBI and other constitutional institutes should be free from the government’s pressure. The Constitutional institutes should not be made a tool of the government,” he added.

Asked about the annual plan for Bihar for the year 2013-14 which was finalised at Rs 34,000 crore, Mr Hussain said the Congress was ‘responsible’ for backwardness of the state.

“The Congress shared power with the RJD for 15 years. The Congress is equally responsible with the RJD for the backwardness of Bihar,” he said.

Mr Hussain said the BJP-JD(U) coalition government in Bihar was doing well under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to develop the state.

He said the Congress’ “media managers” have been ‘publicising’ that the annual plan money was coming from the party’s pocket.
