Army averts tragedy, defuses IED

SRINAGAR, May 14: Army today recovered an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by militants in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district bringing the number of explosive devices recovered on the highway during past two weeks to three.
Police sources said that 4 kilogramme IED placed in a pressure cooker was found by a road opening party of Army in Khumriyat village of North Kashmir’s Lolab area on roadside this morning. The bomb disposal squad of the Army was rushed to the spot and the IED was defused.
The road is being mostly used by the civilians and the Army and it is not known what might have been the target, sources said.
This is the third IED that was recovered during past 15 days by army’s road opening parties, two of them in North Kashmir and one in the outskirts of Srinagar.
Earlier on April 12, Army averted a major tragedy when they detected and defused an IED planted by militants in Handwara area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
Troops of 47 Rashtriya Rifles of counter insurgency Kilo Force detected the 15-kilogram IED planted by militants under a culvert and defused it.
Earlier a five-kg IED was detected and destroyed by Army at Shalteng on Srinagar-Baramulla road on April 30.
