Dhruv crashes at Siachen, pilots safe

SRINAGAR, May 13: An Army’s indigenously built helicopter, on air maintenance operations, crashed toady in the icy heights of Siachen glacier. However, both the pilots evicted safely.
A defence spokesman, Naresh Kumar told Excelsior that both the pilots- Col Sharma and Major Dave – evicted safely and have been evacuated for treatment.
Kumar said that Army has ordered probe into the cause of the crash. “The investigations will reveal the cause and so far nothing can be said about it”, he added.
The advanced light helicopter (ALH) ‘Dhruv’, flown by two pilots of the Army Aviation Squadron, crashed in the northern glacier between 8:15 a.m. and 8:20 a.m.
“One of the pilots fell into a crevasse on the glacier and the other suffered minor bruises. Both the pilots are safe,” sources said.
The Dhruv ALH Mark III, of the Army Aviation Squadron, had taken off from Leh for Siachen as part of air maintenance operations.
Dhruv is an indigenously built helicopter by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and was supplied to Army in 2002. It has one base in Leh and one in Mansbal in Kashmir and is being used for carrying men and machinery to the mountains.
