AHMEDABAD, May 11: An FIR has been lodged against the jail superintendent and eight others, including three jailers, for trying to cover up the recent jail escape bid made by some of the accused in 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts.
The city crime branch registered an FIR after making an elaborate investigations into the sensational jail escape bid in Sabarmati Central Jail that came to light on February 11.
According to the crime branch officials, the FIR names Jail Superintendent RJ Parghi, jailors D K Vankar, DJ Parmar and Hetu Hirolia, subedaar Dharam C Rabari, convicted prisoner Ghanshyam Singh Rathore and the three accused of Ahmedabad serial blasts case-Hafiz Hussain alias Adnan, Sibli alias Sabit and Mohd Ansaar.
All the nine accused have been charged with negligence of duty,destruction of evidence, giving false statements. A case has already been lodged against the serial blasts accused who dug up a 214-feet long tunnel in a bid to escape from the jail. They allegedly tried to cover up their serious lapse of vigilance by putting up a stone in the tunnel to make it seem a short tunnel.
Soon after the escape bid came to the light, the state government appointed a high-level committee to look into the matter. The committee submitted its report last month, holding the jail staff responsible for the serious dereliction of the duty.
As many as 56 people were killed and more than 100 injured in a series of 21 blasts in Ahmedabad on July 26, 2008. The police has arrested 74 people including the recent arrest of Mohammad Shahid Nagori in the blasts case while 24 people are still at large in the case. (UNI)
