Research activities should focus farmers’ economic upliftment: VC SKUAST

JAMMU, Sept 12: Vice Chancellor SKUAST-Jammu, Prof J P Sharma paid visit to Advanced Centre for Rainfed Agriculture (ACRA), Rakh Dhiansar to observe the various research and extension activities being carried out at the Centre.
The Vice Chancellor interacted with the scientific staff of ACRA, Rakh Dhiansar and took stock of ongoing research and extension activities being carried out by ACRA. He was apprised about the progress made so far regarding various developmental initiatives in respect to infrastructure development at ACRA, Rakh Dhiansar. The VC directed the scientists to relate their research with the issues being encountered by the farmers of the domain for their economic upliftment.
On the directions of Prof Sharma, a Custom Hiring Centre has also been established at ACRA, Dhiansar in order to improve the access of the farmers to various agricultural machinery. Apart from that Soil Testing facility has also been revamped to facilitate the farmers.
Dr J P Sharma also stressed upon the scientists to go for the diversification of the existing farming system and opined that strengthening of existing farming system is need of the hour to realize a sizeable improvement in the agricultural productivity and socio-economic status of the rainfed farmers.
Earlier, Dr A P Singh, Incharge ACRA, Rakh Dhiansar briefed about the various research and extension activities going on under All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Dryland Agriculture, National Innovations on Climate Resilient Agriculture Project, University funded research programmes, Volunteer Centres of AICRPs and Rainfed Integrated Farming Systems and Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan.
Dr R K. Gupta, Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu; Dr Deepak Kher, Director Planning, SKUAST-Jammu and Er P C Tanoch, Estates Officer, SKUAST-Jammu also accompanied Vice Chancellor. Others who were also present, included Dr Reena, Dr Permendra Singh, Dr Jai Kumar, Dr Sonika Jamwal, Dr A P Rai, Dr A C Jha, Dr Brinder Singh, Dr Vikas Gupta, Dr Amit Jasrotia, Dr Vinod Gupta, Dr Sanjeev Kumar, Dr Poonam Parihar and Dr Arti Sharma.
