90 in fray for Leh elections

JAMMU, Oct 3:  Ninety candidates were today left in fray for 26 seats of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh after withdrawal of nomination papers by 47 candidates on last date for withdrawals yesterday.
Official sources said the reports compiled by the district administration today revealed that 47 candidates have withdrawn their nomination papers leaving 90 candidates in fray for 26 seats of LAHDC, Leh, the elections for which will be held on October 17.
October 2 was last date for withdrawal of nomination papers but it took the authorities a day more to release complete figures of withdrawals as reports from several far off and hilly areas of Leh district were received this afternoon.
A total of 158 candidates had filed nomination papers till September 29, the last date for filing of papers. Twenty one nomination papers of the candidates including some covering candidates were rejected on September 30, leaving 137 in the race. With 47 candidates withdrawing their nomination papers yesterday, a total of 90 contestants were now in the race for 26 seats of LAHDC Leh.
Congress and BJP, the two strong claimants for power, were contesting 25 seats each while PDP and NC were in fray for eight seats each. Newly formed NLM and Independents were contesting 24 seats.
There will be direct contest for 5 seats as there were only two candidates in fray for them. These seats included Chushul, Lingshet, Buskoo, Martseleng and Panamil.
The campaigning for the elections has already started and would pick up with clear picture emerging after withdrawal of the nomination papers.
