RAIPUR : In a case of gross medical negligence, eight women died and 50 others were hospitalised following botched-up sterilisation surgery at a government-run health camp at Pendari village in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district.
According to official sources, condition of about 30 of the 50 victims admitted to Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS), Apollo and Bilaspur district hospitals was stated to be critical.
Chief Minister Raman Singh had set up a high-level team of doctors to probe the incident while announcing a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of those succumbed to the killer surgery conducted on Saturday evening. Slamming the government for the botched-up sterilisation operation in the constituency of state Health Minister Amar Agrawal, principal opposition Congress party has given a call for Bilaspur Bandh tomorrow and demanded immediate resignation of the Minister and stern action against the erring doctors. According to reports, a total of 83 women drawn from a dozen villages in Takhatpur block, had undergone family planning operation at the health camp organised by the state Health Department.
A day after the surgery, more than 70 women fell ill and rushed to the district hospital with severe vomiting and pain in the abdomen. While six women died last evening, two other women succumbed in the wee hours today. The authorities have shifted 33 patients to CIMS, 17 to other private hospitals in Bilaspur.
Health Minister Mr Agrawal said that the government was awaiting
the autopsy report to ascertain the exact cause of the deaths. “A probe into the incident has been ordered and all those found
guilty will be taken into task,” he said. Chief Minister Dr Singh, who directed the authorities to provide
all possible medical care to the victims, today rushed to Bilaspur
to enquire about their condition.
