Commendable achievement, says LG

JAMMU, Sept 4: As the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) today released ranking of top educational and research institutions across the country for the year 2025, University of Kashmir (KU) has taken a significant leap from its last year position while the University of Jammu (JU) has almost managed to retain its previous ranking.

Besides KU and JU, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) Kashmir is the only institute from J&K, which has figured among the country’s top 100 institutes in the Overall Category, which includes universities, IITs, IIMS etc.
Five other institutes in J&K, including IIT Jammu, NIT Srinagar, IIM Jammu, SKUAST-Jammu and SMVDU have also found place in the NIRF ranking in their respective categories.
Lt Governor Manoj Sinha has extended his heartiest congratulations to these universities and institutions of J&K for their remarkable accomplishment in the NIRF -2025 ranking, which was released today by the Union Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan at New Delhi.
“This is a commendable achievement and a testament to transformative efforts to create world-class teaching and research institutions,” LG said, in a post on X.
In the Overall Category, KU has secured 59th rank, a significant jump from its last year 69th ranking while JU has maintained it 89th rank this year also. SKUAST-Kashmir has secured place among the top 100 institutions in Overall Category for the first time by scoring 94th position.
IIT Madras, Indian Institute of Science Bangalore and IIT Bombay have stood first, second and third, respectively in the Overall NIRF Ranking of Institutes.
Notably, KU remains the only University from J&K to feature among the country’s top 50 universities in the University Category. In this category, KU has registered an improvement of 11 notches from its last year performance and stood at 34th position this year. It has achieved an impressive 8th place among all State Public Universities (SPUs) across India, cementing its standing as top-10 institutions in this category.
JU, which was at 50th position last year in the University Category, has slipped to 51st place this year even as it has improved its standing in the Public Universities Category by rising from 23rd rank in 2024 to 21st rank in 2025.
SKUAST –Kashmir has emerged as 7th in Agriculture and Allied Sectors Category, 36th in State Public University Category, 75th in the University Category and 94th in Overall Category.
On the other hand, SKUAST-Jammu could find place only in the Agriculture and Allied Sector Category and secured 23rd rank among the total 44 institutes in this category.
In the Category of Engineering, IIT Jammu and NIT Srinagar are the only institutions from J&K, which have secured NIRF ranking by getting 56th and 73rd positions, respectively. In last year NIRF ranking, IIT Jammu had secured 62nd position while NIT Srinagar was placed at 79th rank.
In the Management Category, IIM Jammu is the only institute from J&K to secure a place in the NIRF ranking with 35th position. IIM Jammu has also improved its ranking over the last year performance, when it stood 42nd in the category.
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University has secured a place in the Category of Architecture & Planning by securing 23rd place among total 40 institutes. Last year, SMVDU was ranked 31st in this category.
In the Open University Category, IGNOU has stood first among the total three such universities in the country, which had applied for the NIRF ranking.
This is for the second consecutive time that IGNOU has achieved No 1 rank in this category.
The NIRF has been evaluating performance of the education institutions across the country since 2015 in five key areas. This framework outlines a methodology to rank the institutions. The methodology draws from the overall recommendations broad understanding arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD, to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions. The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception”.
