RAIPUR, Sep 26 : Six factory workers were killed and several others injured when an under-construction structure collapsed at the Godavari Ispat plant in Chhattisgarh’s Silatra industrial area today.
Officials fear the toll could rise further as rescue teams continue to search for labourers trapped under the debris.
Eyewitnesses said over a dozen workers were on duty when the steel and concrete framework suddenly gave way, burying many beneath the rubble.
Panic gripped the site as fellow workers raised an alarm, prompting police and district authorities to rush rescue teams. Emergency crews managed to pull out several injured labourers, who were shifted to a private hospital in Devendra Nagar, Raipur for treatment.
According to officials, at least half a dozen workers remain critically injured, while efforts are underway to clear the wreckage and locate others feared trapped. “Our priority is to save lives and ensure proper medical care for the injured. A detailed probe will follow,” Raipur District Collector Gaurav Singh said.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed deep sorrow over the loss of six workers and multiple injuries. “I have directed the district administration to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured. My condolences are with the families of the deceased. I pray for peace to the departed souls and strength to the families, and for the speedy recovery of the injured,” he said.
The tragedy has raised fresh concerns over industrial safety in Chhattisgarh, with local residents and relatives of the victims questioning whether adequate precautions were in place at the site.
Authorities have ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident, assuring accountability for lapses and strict action against those found responsible. (UNI)
