HANLE, Aug 9: Showcasing the nomadic heritage and lifestyle, the 5th Nomadic Festival was commenced at Hanle, here today.
The festival was organised by the Ladakh Cultural Academy in collaboration with the Ladakh Tourism Department.
The event was graced by Skyabje Thuksey Rinpoche as the chief guest.
Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) Leh, Tashi Gyalson and secretary of tourism, Executive Councillor, Tashi Yakzi were also present during the function.
More than 1,000 artists from various villages participated, presenting vibrant performances of songs and dances.
Speaking on the occasion, Skyabje Thuksey Rinpoche called for the continuation of the festival in the years to come, emphasising the importance of maintaining cleanliness in the area and protecting its natural biodiversity.
He also urged the youth to learn about and preserve the rich heritage of the nomadic lifestyle.
CEC Tashi Gyalson announced that starting this year, the festival will be held annually on August 9, coinciding with the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, to honour and celebrate Ladakh’s indigenous nomadic communities.
The event brought together nomads from across Changthang, who showcased their unique cultural heritage and pastoral lifestyle through traditional songs, dances, handicrafts and cuisines.
Stalls displayed locally made wool products, dairy items and traditional attire, reflecting the deep bond between the Changpa nomads and their environment.
Over the course of the day, thousands of visitors, including domestic and international tourists, experienced the nomadic lifestyle in its authentic environment.
The Nomadic Festival began in 2021, with the first edition held in Korzok, Changthang.
The festival will conclude on August 10.
